The ceremony was attended by acting chief priest T. Gangadhar Ling, BKTC Chairman Hemant Dwivedi, Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal, Vice Chairman Vijay Kapruwan, CEO Vijay Prasad Thapliyal, temple committee members, public representatives, Vedic scholars, Panchgai Hak-Hakook holders, and administrative officials.

Why Does Kedarnath Temple Close Every Year?

Since Kedarnath temple closing in October 2025, it will finally open on 22nd April 2026.  The reason behind this is, The Kedarnath Temple follows a sacred annual cycle of 6 month closure and reopening that has been maintained for over a thousand years.

Kedarnath During Winters

The temple closes every winter due to the extreme Himalayan weather that makes the region completely inaccessible as temperatures plummet to -20°C or lower, and the 16-kilometre trek route from Gaurikund becomes buried under several feet of snow, making the kedarnath trek difficult.

According to ancient tradition, it is believed that during the six months of winter, the deities themselves worship Lord Kedarnath and so human devotees step aside. The summer opening marks the return of the shrine to mortal pilgrims.

The reopening is tied to the Akshaya Tritiya calendar and determined by Panchang calculations, ensuring the doors open on an auspicious muhurta that has been observed and refined over generations.

Best Time To Visit Kedarnath Dham

While the opening season runs from April 22 to November 11, 2026, different months offer different experiences:

Late April – May (Opening Season):

The days immediately following the kapaat opening are the most spiritually electric. Crowds are large, energy is high, and the experience of witnessing the first darshan of the season is unforgettable.

However, weather can still be unpredictable and chilly, with occasional snowfall at higher elevations.

June:

Peak pilgrim season, especially around school holidays. Expect significant crowds and plan logistics well in advance.

July – August (Monsoon):

The trek route can become difficult due to rain and occasional landslides. Helicopter services are a safer option during this period. The landscape, however, is at its most lush and beautiful.

September – October (Ideal Window):

This is widely considered the best time to visit. The weather around Char Dham is stable and clear, the monsoon rains have washed the mountains clean, temperatures range comfortably between 5°C and 18°C, and crowds thin out compared to peak summer.

The natural beauty of the alpine meadows surrounding Kedarnath is breathtaking during this period.

Whatever time you choose as the saying goes “whenever Baba Kedar calls you, that is the best time to visit.”
